The Manitou Lake since the 1800s native people have been bringing their sick to the lake they named after the spirit Manitou. The practice started after some Assiniboine afflicted with smallpox were cured after drinking and submerging themselves in its water.
Medicine men called "lake" MANITOU" because it meant GOD to them, believing it came from the great Spirits..
The beach attracted many tourists at the beginning of the 20th century. The beach is nestled in a glacier-scooped valley.
